The
Lia Pootah
People

The Lia Pootah Aboriginal People of Tasmania, Australia.

We are Tasmania's unrecognised Aboriginal community.  We are also the community that the TAC (Tasmanian Aboriginal Center) wishes did not exist.  We survive as our Ancestors survived, with a struggle for the recognition of our existence, in the same way our Ancestors did.

Popular myths of history are not historical fact.  Denial about our existence and our Aboriginal Ancestry by the TAC will not remove our heritage.  Insisting that we are not Aboriginal because we do not fit into the TAC guidelines on Aboriginality does not remove who we are and who our Ancestors were.

We are an independent  community with our own cultural heritage and cultural practices. We believe that reconciliation between every Tasmanian community is the way of the future.  We have our own organizations and are linked to a number of other Aboriginal communities in Tasmania.  One of the highest profile communities for the Lia Pootah Community is that of Circular Head in the northwest of Tasmania, where the struggle goes on for access to our own land.

Our Community Organisations

Wallantanalinany Lydidder

(Southern country all around) is the Southern Traditional Elders Council for the Lia Pootah People.  We have Elders living in all areas of Tasmania from the north west to the south east.

The Elders of the Lia Pootah Community believe that politics are not what Aboriginal organizations are about.  The Elders believe that the Traditional values of the Ancestors where knowledge was to share and learn by, and that it is important to share our history and culture with all.

Too many lies are still in existence about our Aboriginal heritage and Ancestry.   The Elders believe that is is important to rectify the lies and modern myths, and thus set our Ancestors spiritually free.  This can only be done through education and breaking down the stereotypes.
